NAGARE / CURVED RETAINING WALLS
As the first modular system of its kind, Nagare introduces curved precast retaining walls to a market long dominated by rigid, straight solutions. Developed by Prodotto for Cobefa, Nagare redefines how elevation and flow are handled in outdoor spaces—both functionally and visually. The concept was honoured with both an iF Design Award and the prestigious Red Dot: Best of the Best, recognising it as a groundbreaking innovation in landscape architecture.
Research
Our research revealed a clear need for prefab retaining walls that blend more naturally into sloping landscapes. Traditional straight walls often clash with organic terrains, especially where elevation changes occur. Designers and contractors are looking for flexible solutions that combine structural performance with visual harmony and efficient installation.
Design Strategy
Previously, we translated Cobefa’s expertise in precast concrete into a modular system for straight retaining walls. With Nagare, we took it further: we developed a new range of curved walls that follow the natural flow of the landscape. Each segment is based on a sinusoidal curve, enabling seamless height transitions and fluid horizontal layouts.
Organic curved shapes
Nagare takes inspiration from the soft lines of Japanese rice terraces. Each module represents a quarter of a sinus curve, available in both inner and outer radii. The result: flowing, rhythmic shapes that suit organic paths, slopes, or park zones while offering maximum design freedom.
Smooth vertical transition
The second innovation lies in the vertical build-up: each curved module is available in 250 mm steps, ranging from 0.5 to 2.5 meters in height. These transitional elements allow for smooth changes in elevation—without the harsh ‘shark tooth’ effect seen in traditional systems—offering both aesthetic continuity and functional clarity.

We supported this project from the very first sketch to the final concrete product. Starting with a sharp analysis of market needs and industry norms, we challenged the idea that retaining walls must be straight. We translated these insights into a strategic product concept, developed modular curved components, and guided the design through engineering and production. Along the way, we shaped a strong visual identity and helped position Nagare as a forward-thinking sub-brand within Cobefa’s portfolio.
